The basic amplifier technology is exactly the same, because it does the 
same job in both cases - provides power amplification of an audio 
signal. It's the accessories you mention (physical and electronic) you 
add around it which determine the personality of the unit and match it 
to its intended purpose.

Hi-fi customers may demand a somewhat higher level of performance 
(distortion, noise, etc.) but the underlying topology remains very similar.

As an analogy, you could take a 2.0l diesel engine and make a family car 
or, with different accessories, a tractor. Customers would expect the 
family car to be a bit more refined, and this might need a bit more 
design effort, but the structure of the engine remains the same.
