With an average number components, snipping before soldering is necessary when you use an assembly jig, since the back of the board will otherwise resemble a bionic porcupine.
I'm not saying this is a better way of soldering, but it is likely to be much faster.
And since I've no intention to start a flameware on the best way to solder, I am _not_ going to point out that dissipating heat away from the solder joint is not generally considered a good thing.
