Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but are you sure you haven't got the battery polarity reversed? These days we're so used to it that minus is at ground, but in the old germanium days it was the other way around.
It can imagine that the circuit might work for a while being powered from the 100 uF cap (charged with correct polarity), even if the battery is wired backwards.
