Sounds like a big smoothing capacitor.  What has happened to it, and how 
can you be sure that it wasn't caused by some other problem?

If it's just a smoothin cap, then pretty much anything with roughly the 
same value and at least as high a voltage rating will do to get you 
going.  You'll probably find 4700μF easier to find, and with modern 
components it won't be any bigger ;-)
