[sdiy] Quantizer scales

Melodic minor!!!! (Major with a flatted third.) Several modes of this
scale are very important in jazz (such as the seventh mode -- the so-called
"altered" mode because it contains the skeleton of a dominant seventh chord:
1 3 b7, plus every possible alteration: b9 #9 #11 (or b5) and b13 (or #5).
So, if you have a C melodic minor scale: C D Eb F G A B C, then you have the
B altered scale. Some of the other modes are also quite important,
including the one built off of the fourth degree (the F in this case) which
is known as the "lydian dominant" scale -- lydian with a b7, or
(alternatively) mixolydian with a #4.

I think the diminished scale is another excellent choice. This only has two
modes, but they are both pretty important.

So, I would say: Major (7 modes), Melodic Minor (7 modes), Diminished (2
modes), Chromatic. That will get you pretty far, musically. The only
problem with these is that they contain no b3 intervals (like the
middle-eastern scales).
