Here is a web page with everything I know about this crucial subject:

  http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/parts/3.5mm-sockets/

This page is primarily concerned with the new beryllium-copper version
of the QingPu Electronics WQP-PJ3010BM. My page also considers some
alternative sockets.

The previous version, or perhaps it was their PJ301BM version) used
phosphor bronze for the primary contact - which could become deformed,
leading to a non-functioning NC contact.

I bought 100 of the deformable sockets from Erthenvar in the USA, who
offer a very good deal:

However, they noted a potential problem with the NC contacts.

Edan Wang at QingPu was really helpful, including responding several
times to my initial queries on Sunday evening. He sent me samples of
the new production sockets and they have no deformation problems. These
use a dual NC contact, which I think will be more reliable than the
usual single contact arrangement. Edan told me that 5000 of the new
production sockets were on their way to the Erthenvar people, so this
will be a good place for many people to buy them.

This subject is covered by the Muffwiggler wiki page:

  http://wiki.muffwiggler.com/wiki/Vertical_Mount_Components

which I just updated.

I will post a version of this message on the "Muff's Modules & More" forum:
