Thanks to all for your suggestions.  I'm going to try the Blu-Tack first, I
think.

You know what would be perfect?  If, instead of just a hex nut, the damn
things actually came with the threaded cap which both affixed the bezel to
the panel and held in the plastic plug.  If you are familiar with Swagelok
or other ferrule fittings, you'll understand exactly what I mean.

Why does all this stuff have to be so cheaply made?  I'd gladly pay a few
nickels more for something that works properly.
