David Ingebretsen, who used to/is on this list has a lot of knowledge

I'd hazard a guess that the diodes are used as variable resistors, with 
the matched transistor pair used to generate complementary currents to 
control it, which is why it is important to use a matched pair like the 
SSM2210.
