[sdiy] Help! What protective coating on older Buchla touch keyboards

This question was asked by Reed on the Buchla Yahoo group a while ago. 
He said:

"Charles Cohen said that Mr. Buchla once told him he originally used a 
solvent (oil) based polyurethane. Charles also noted that his 218 
appears to have had a coat of poly re-applied at a certain point after 
initially leaving the factory, as there is visible flaking from an 
earlier coat under the top coat."
