Well, you got me on that one, just realized the article was
way old , but the moustache is fine and dandy! :-)

Some knobs actually has led inside and cabling wrapped a couple turns around the
shaft but a better way to do it is like HIFI knobs who mostly are
hollow so all you do
is drill a tiny hole where you want your indicator dot to be then let
a LED go through
the front-panel somewhat and blast light into the hollowness of the
knob and viola
there is your lightened knob!
