It's not always a good idea to melt plastic with an iron -
I have managed to ruin a few tips that way.
I am not a metallurgist, but I suspect that the chlorine in PVC
(for example) attacks the surface of the coated tip, in a permanent way.
It isn't a coating, it is a definite structural change.
