Best suggestion is to have your friend learn from his mistake, I'm afraid...
Pots have lubricant in their shafts, and any kind of solvent cleaner will
wash it out and make the pot feel bad, even if you do get the crap out of
the wiper and track and stop it crackling.
You can usually disassemble and re-lubricate sliders, but in my experience,
once a pot feels rough you pretty much have to live with it.
A couple of months back, I picked up an old mixer which, as expected, had a
lot of crackly pots.
My solution was to remove and replace *every single one* with a new pot.
The result is a mixer with absolutely no crackles, and a lovely feel on
every pot.
A lot of effort (~300 pots, over a few nights), but to me it was worth it to
have a mixer that should last years before it needs pot maintenance.
