Time and again I have tried the PICKit3 only to have it waste my time and ended up using
the ICD2 or ICD3.

The PICKit might be OK for some PIC processors but I don't trust it one bit !

(the ICDs have not been trouble)

While someone might support both, programmers are so cheap...

You can get the Atmel branded official USB programmer for around $30 from
Digikey.  I've tried some of the clones and the Real Thing just seems to
work more reliably.

For PIC I use the MPLAB compatible board from Olimex, but I see that
Microchip has finally realized that $200 for a programmer is rather limiting
and the PICkit3 is down to $70 so I'd probably go "name brand" on that too.
