The answer also depends on what sort of input you're protecting.  If  
its an inverting input (series resistor before input) I wouldn't put  
any diodes on the input itself, I'd put low-leakage diodes across the  
op-amp inputs if using an op-amp that is susceptible to phase- 
reversal.  Bipolar op-amps tend to be quite robust in this aspect and  
often (check the datasheet!) include internal protection diodes.
