If the dsPIC has 5V tolerant open drain outputs, this could be as easy as
adding a resistor from 12V and 5V zener diode (or a 5V voltage reference),
the diode goes between output and ground. If they're not 5V tolerant, you
need another transistor, but by then one of those micro-regulators would
likely be easier to deal with.
