[sdiy] DX7 hacking?

The FS1r is a modern FM synth with format filters and 8 operators. Amazing, but a monster to program.
The TX81z is a rack unit, unique to Yamaha's FM line since the operators have multiple wave forms (square, saw, etc.)
None of this is hacking and I'm no FM guru. But it's some good things to look into that further explore the possibilities of FM.
Some say that the earlier DX7s with 8bit oscillators sounded better. The latter versions were 12bit oscillators.
I always wanted to see what circuit bending an FM synth would yield, but I do not currently have disposable funds for a $100 paperweight if it went wrong.
I'm sure that some of my facts are off feel free to call me out but not flame. I'm just trying to contribute to the conversation.
