   I went back to transistors for the most part.  That, and whatever 
microcontroller serves a need.  Also have backup designs ready for 
things like if/when parts like the RC4151 goes away.  At least I can 
still get TL072s.
You can cram a lot of SMD transistors in a small space.

   I think the notion of "fun" isn't in the part, but in the finished 
device, no matter what it is made from.
