I had no difficulty at all understanding the original 'whiner' - and I think 
his entertainingly put complaint, is indeed valid.
Modern chip manufacturing has moved toward more comples and specialised 
items - as everything has. So, the more basic items are disappearing.in 
favour of one-trick chips.

I do suspect that some of these specialist chips could be misused 
creatively, but i think the future lies in distributed dsp - the production 
of single DSP based modules with analog and CV input/output.
