[sdiy] There is no fun analogue chips anymore!

And now a "evil whiners" reflection!
>Tom said:
>But it isn't true. There's all the THAT Corp stuff; various VCAs and matched transistors.
Hell yes its true, your just in denial! :)
Tom says a 4301 compressor chip is fun, after he soldered how many? 200 units?
And can you build a synth with a compressor chip? if im all your ears!
CoolAudio 2164
clone is nice but according to insiders is alive "only" because
Behringer buys ton's of it!
We better all call up Uli Berhinger and say thank you and hope he will
not jump ship?..
>Hassle THAT, maybe?
But Tom do point to a interesting issue! Should be considered, i have to ponder,
previoulsy i do managed to hassle EMU Dave pretty well i recall, he wrote like a
Gnu who had a crockodile in his pants! (actually he was bored in his office and
was glad someone popped in asking some interesting questions).
>Jim says: Heck 3280!!
Not sure what Jim sugest but i think he meant the situation is so bad
he would praise
the lord him self if the 3280 would surface back again and yes that
would be a blast
and would defenitively make our day a lot more fun again, perhaps not
for the chip but
for what it can "do right" the other oldies don't even come close...
even trimmed like
hell! No fiddle in hell just accordions!
>Paul S says: NE5517?
Paul S on the other hand seams to sugest to Jim he instead use the NE5517 to his
througzero VCO core!! I wonder how many of Pauls products really uses the 5517
he sugest? Im sure ""his" THZ VCO uses a 32 bit ARM instead his customers
would definitively start "whine" if they got 5517 based one!.. He
could even face
Cynthia syndrome!! (a nuclear rector delivering only voltage and no current).
>Blachet says:
>get the NJM13600 from Mouser, 2164 can be bought from Mammoth ,try some
>of those THAT ICs too!
Blacet is like a old vinyl record or even stonecake stuck in a loop
but i thank him for mention
these 2 old chips and a manufacturer who deals with all in one
compressors and non temp
compensated dual ota in SSOP package, i really thank him for mention
them because it
really nails down my point about the sorry state of the analog audio
chip market! I'm sure
he serached hard and deep to find more then these 3 but finally gave
up for known reasons!
>Blacet also say:
>Quityawhinnin'
I say to Blacet:
golickyourgenitals.
>I Harry (along with my evil-twin Jim) says:
>There are always other ways to skin a cat (so to speak). Explore and grow :^)
>but we can still make do with the LM13700 and NE5517 when needed.
Harry, Jims evil brother, point to an old post about 5517 but misses
other "old" small talk
the 5517 is desicribed as having ""serious CV popping" bleedtrough
which indeed renders
it for fun stuff rather then VCA's and barely a SVF, the 13700 is
undoubtedly best. And yes
my own findings is that the bleedtrough is seriously bad i simply dont use it.
>explore alternative designs, including (gasp) discrete.
But evil brother fails to mention ""what"? and discrete is nono in this
thread by nature! We are talking "versatile" and likely fun "chips"...
>Today, we have many components (in SMT) that can be exploited, making
>possible designs that if implemented in through-hole would have required
>a grand piano sized board.
Wich is kind of smoke screening try to diverge to mounting techniques!
But for the sake of completeness shoot man and i say give us examples
of fun SMT chips that we didn't have before? ""many"" is no answer evil
win brother particularly if they are all OP amps! :)
But grand piano size can be cut down by cutting the legs like a Mexican
narko trafficante do on daily basis to DIP's and mount them SMT!
Making holes seams kind of a OLD method and not fun at all these
days in 32BIT ARM land!
>I might say (OK I will say) that the era of SSM and CEM chips often
>resulted in 'me-too' synth designs that offered little change in sonic
>palette and only superficial differences in user interface. Look alike
>sound alike...
I newer said anything about CEM or SSM but noone here would deny
not buying the P381/382 if it where available on the open market?
Now the other side of the weed:
Veronica noticed a fun thing about old chips:
>Whilst the 741 is not a CA3080 replacement, has anyone tried using the
>two offset null pins (1 and 5) for gain control?
This i also noticed some many moon turns ago and can say there is more then
just the 741! Actually im going to test one of these old beasts to see if some
fun comes out of it, probably smoke but that's fun to!
>Owe says. FET!
Ove do have some valid points to the issue of fun if there been any
improvement to
FET's lately?A improved N or P FET with absolute and linear Vgs would make a
lot of fun not even being a chip! It would literately be a blast!
The whiner so condludes!
What i meant by fun chips if anyone care is chips that do something more besides
regular one onsie-twosie function, not combo VCF VCA albeit neat to have besides
i could mention a couple interesting new chips that clearly can have
use for a boutique
manufacturer but i think i wait since some of you old folks do sound
like old sovjet
citizens being deadly afraid even to hear there is something fairly
new other then good
old sovjetism!
Cheers!
