Yes. If using a zener diode you really want to be using 4V7 or 5V1 to
minimise temp.co effects. But as you say higher would be better to
keep the size of the deadspot useful. You might be lucky with two in
series giving 10V2 (2 x 5V1) each side, but it only leaves you about
1V9 headroom from 12V rails. With filtering this might well not be an
issue, and still give you a much better deadspot that doesn't take up
too much precious rotation. Definitely worth exploring.
