Indeed, it's one of thoseold  standards from the first days of analog 
computers.
Sometimes it is worth remembering that an analog synth is really just a 
specialised analog computer - same parts, same construction, same hassles!

So far as centre detents go - in some applications it can be easier to go 
with a centre detent tapped pot, because then you might have the option 
arranging the circuit with the centre tap at ground.
 Still trying to think of a circuit where one would want a centre detent log 
pot..
