I build in MOTM format, and I only really care about board length, as I try
to mount the boards with the longest dimension oriented vertically.  In that
case, the board can be up to about 7.5" long (the panels are 8.75" tall).
This leaves enough space on the ends so as not to interfere with the module
mounting hardware.  I have one board which is nearly that long (the new
Korgasmatron III -- 7.4" long). I mounted this one parallel to the panel
(the first time I've done this) to take advantage of symmetry, and had no
problems whatsoever installing the module in my case.  The whole module is
only about 2.5" deep.  Pictures are here:
