 IIRC, the scopes we are mainly using are 45x. For soldering most
components, I use the lowest magnification setting, which I don't know
the spec of.

 When soldering ICs, I'll usually rotate the board at an angle, and
increase the magnification in order to inspect the heel and knee areas
of the individual legs of an IC. I never use full mag of the scope.

 It's possible that 10x might just do the trick for larger SMT components.

 I'd like to get a microscope for home use someday for SMT work. For
the record, I also have bad eyesight. I recently got bifocals, but
everything is clear as a bell while using a nice microscope!
