[sdiy] Opinion poll - Through Hole ~vs~ SMT

I feel that the change-over to SMT is inevitable :-( just a question of
time.
I see RadioSpares are listing the SSM2164 (temporarily out of stock) as
an SMT device now and are available to back-order.
I've done JH boards with SMT bypass caps, felt my eyesight was
inadequate even with a loupe so now have a stereo microscope (X20) for
such things.

I don't think SMT would scare me away now, but it does mean I have to
start a new parts collection so I would need to factor that into the
project's desirability.

Alan

Through hole - partly for eyesight reasons, and also as TH is still
widely used and available, and many sdiy folks have stocks of parts.

Would have no problem with the odd SMT component on a board though, if
for example it was nearly unobtanium or expensive in TH.
Boards pre-stuffed with the occasional really fiddly SMT bits would
make sense too IMO.

cheers,
Dave
