I did something similar for my MSc project - you can get the report PDF

It includes the full source (mostly C, little bit of assembler) in one 
of the appendices for an 8051-based MIDI-to-pitch clock converter for a 
Walsh function-based monosynth.  In this case I used 32 points between 
semitones, and 4-byte longs, giving a table size of 1536 bytes, running 
from a 10MHz crystal.
