Indeed, I've used a $25 hand-punch to make holes 1/4" holes in .0625" 
6061 aluminum.  The only issues I've had with this method are:

- it only really works on bare aluminum -- it tends to damage any sort 
of paint/decaling around the hole.

- it doesn't work if you're working beyond an inch and a half or so 
from the edge of your metal.

- it's presumably less precise than using a table punch.
