The notion of footage comes from pipe organs. It is the
approximate length of the longest pipe in a stop. At 340 m/s
and 1 foot = .3048 m, an 8-foot pipe would ring at about 69.7 Hz.

For electronic instruments, 8' means 440 Hz on the middle A. On
a 61-key keyboard, the low C would be 440 / 2 ** (2 + 9/12) =
65.41 Hz.
