[sdiy] Switched-mode power supply module in synths... good orbad?

Perhaps if going from wall AC to DC direct but you don't have to do that.
You could use a wallwart or brick for the AC to DC source, then small switchers for the various voltages.
They are so simple - the IC, an inductor, a diode, a few resistors, and some caps. The parts themselves are SOT23 or DIP8 for our type requirements.
Good ones have output short circuit protection and soft start. As others have said - used all over the place.

And if you're really lucky they'll put out high voltage and ruin everything connected to them.
