FreeRTOS is "OK".  I have a small bit of experience with it on AVR and ARM.

You might also want to look into Ethernut (Nut/OS).  It is also free.  
Just ignore the TCP/IP stack..  I have used Ethernut a lot on AVRs and 
it works quite well.

The difference between the two is that FreeRTOS is fully preEmptive, 
while Ethernut is cooperative.  Ethernut interfaces to your code more 
like Unix, (Linux), however.
