I once used a GAL for it. A simple GAL16V8 did the job. And there was a similar project in an electronics magazine (I think it was the German c't magazine).

other possible chips:
 DM8880/9368, V40511, D345, D346, 4311, 4368, 74C915
But I bet most of them are obsolete...
