That's a blast from the past... when I was a senior at Wash U - uhm, 1992 or 1993 - the final project in the digital design lab involved making an add-on-board to a 68000-based computer board thingy. We had to have it drive D/A converters hooked to an oscilloscope to make a raster character display. 

Alas, my team never got ours fully working, but I don't think anyone else did either IIRC. ;)

Man, the wirewrap... so much wirewrapping...
