No idea.  I usually use a hacked version of AdaBoot just from laziness and
that its timing is a bit more relaxed.  Optiboot is a little picky on timing
to get into the bootloader.  Usually not a problem unless I'm doing
something by hand and have to hit the reset button and start a process.  Not
such an issue these days now that everything supports DTR toggling. ( or is
it RTS... whichever ).

That and I patched the loader for one of my projects so it would disconnect
internal connections from the serial port during the boot process so wiring
you might have on the serial port ( MIDI, etc ) wouldn't interfear with the
upgrade.

You could always drop them an email and ask.
