Because I have little experience of analogue/power electronics and am 
thus shy of going for "off-label" use.

The BUF634 and the LT1010 both show driving a virtual ground as 
application examples in the datasheet. Whilst I'm not saying that other 
things won't work, in both these cases I have the device manufacturer 
saying explicitly that this is a suitable application for the part.

I guess with all my corporate years, I tend to be quite guarded in my 
approach to anything where I don't already have considerable experience.
