Dan, if it's of any interest, this is (some of) my current relevant 
reading list:

Microcontroller-wise, I'm moving into the Freescale camp, will be 
working with HCS08 (using MC9S08AC128 to replace ATMega128 - at 
something like quarter of the price) and Kinetis ARM Cortex M4 parts for 
"bigger" stuff.  Anticipating that most of my audio stuff will be using 
FreeRTOS.

The MSP430 and embedded Linux books are the ones in this collection not 
SDIY-related.
