Yeah, agreed!  I picked this stereo microscope off eBay a few years
ago, and it sure makes inspecting SMD work much easier, and soldering
small parts a doddle:

The heavy base allows the arm to swing out over the bench.

For those in the UK on the hunt for something similar I see a few of
them on eBay right now (290666512618, 280819266918, 190629249787).
