Hi Tom,

For the cost of a couple of transistors and diodes I would look at
adding a driver stage to an op-amp. I built the first headphone
amplifier circuit in Self's small signal book (top of page 391) and
the distortion and power output is superb.  Unfortunately in my
current project even that required too many components so I'm using
the simpler (but a bit more distorty) headphone amp as used in my
vintage Allen and Heath mixing desk.

That CMOY amplifier is crud.  That entire tangent site is so full of
crud I use it as a prime example of the amount of crud that can be
found on the internet.  YMMV.
