I wonder how much of that is intentional, like "wow look how loud this 
is, that's it only on 3!"

As an aside, if you compare the throttle linkages on a Citroën CX and a 
Renault Fuego - both with the same 2.2 litre Douvrin engine - you'll 
notice that the Citroën passes the cable over a semicircular "cam" to 
drive the throttle linkage, but the Renault has a cam with a bit of a 
taper on it giving a quicker action in the first half of the throttle 
movement - by the time the Citroën has the first stage of the carb half 
open, the Renault has it fully open and is just about to open the second 
stage.  This gave the Renault a much "sportier" feel, despite only being 
a little bit lighter.

It's all down to control feel...
