Thanks Florian that's a great help.
And thanks all - yes, it looks like they're jumpers. The coating on  
one had dissolved into a white powder which looked like ash. Getting a  
closer look shows the wire quite intact - so that's not going to be  
the problem is it!
I'll push on...
