When I plug into my mixer.  I guess it wasn't really that obvious.  I forgot
to install a panel ground on one PCB and didn't ground the panel, and when I
plugged it into my mixer, it was very noisy.  I ended up just wiring ground
from a nearby pot to one of the jack rings.  (I could always do that anyway,
but I prefer to bring panel ground from the PCB.)  Another time, I noticed a
lot of noise on one module, and after inspection realized that I had
neglected to install the panel ground wire.  In both cases, I believe the
panel was plugged directly into the mixer (different ground).

Of course, in my system, when something with a grounded panel is plugged
into something without it, the problem is solved anyway.  +1 for conductive
panels!
