Wasn't he the ex-post office guy who had to design all those racks of valves
& keep them running?
So far as mercury delay lines go, my first ever job was as a tech assistant
at a weather research establishment. We had an ex-WW2 radar - with a mercury
delay (that held one sweep worth of image so you could subtract it from the
next sweep & show only what was moving.)
My job was climbing up the OUTSIDE of the tower whenever a cold front was
coming & hang instruments out. Those were the days.. I don't think we'll see
a mercury delay line in a retro FX box any time soon.
