Still there are some things that you read that actually ~are~ good tips... MesaBoogie used to brag that they beat their amps with a hammer. I do the same (well. a rubber hammer). A few good raps on the chassis can reveal loose
connections that work well at low volume on the bench, but fail when the unit is back on the job. It can weed out excessive microphonics in tubes as well. 

You just have to be sure you don't actually HIT the tubes  :^)

Oh -- and some of the time when he's poking about the capacitors with the fingers of one hand, he's resting his other hand on the chassis.
