A friend of mine got into it and his opinion was that the GPU was designed
fairly specifically to process graphics (fancy that) and while it contains a
high degree of parallelism, it turned out to be less efficient than desired
at processing audio. I do not know the particulars of the device he chose to
play with, though Nvidia sounds familiar. I too had some interest, but
there's been nothing of note in terms of a synth, effects processor etc. of
which I am aware. He eventually went with an FPGA for DSP.
