No, you can definitely get it chromatic. The key is to set parameters relative to the frequency/period rather than in absolute terms. This allows the sound to scale up and down correctly. For example, instead of setting a triangle windowing envelope to '12ms', set it to 50% of the period. Instead of setting the granule sinewave to 1400Hz, use x3.5. Etc etc..you get the idea.
I did this on my prototype as 'musical mode'. It'll accept a CV and you can play a tune from a keyboard. Particularly good for basslines, I'd say - a nice rubbery quality to the sound.
