If you've never seen a mercury arc rectifier working you really should:

The flickering glow, the buzzing.... all very Frankenstein!
From that wikipedia page I'd love to see the 150kV one in Manitoba working.
Underground power stations used to be full of them, with load-operated
cooling fans. Imagine: the flickering blue glow, the fans whirring up
and down, the cobwebs,.... the skeletons...
