Mercury is/was used in some high power tubes. I've got an old 1kV rectifier
with some mercury in it. I've seen other high current tubes with so much
mercury in them that it sloshed around. I'm not aware of it ever being used
in any other application, though. The tubes I'm talking about are all
rather *large*. Not the sort of thing you'd see in an audio amplifier.

Some tubes had radioactive isotopes in them to act as a bias. They're
clearly marked with a radiation symbol.
