There is a patent relating to the way the SSM2044 works which contains 
transistor-level detail. It is US Patent # 4404529 and I think I got a 
copy from www.freepatentsonline.com. While you are there, pick up a copy 
of # 3969682, which relates to the SSM2040 and is presumably the source 
material for the various clones.
