The anode of the diode should be on the power supply side,
and the cathode on the battery side. This allows current
to charge the battery when the power supply is on, but doesn't
allow the battery to try and power the whole unit when the
power supply is off.
You might want to compare your unit against the schematics
for the ADM2048, the power supply might be very similar.
