Probably if you only use it for what you are wiring it for. I think
different pieces of gear do different things with the pins, so you may
end up sending power to ground if you use the cable on something else. I
would make sure and label the cable very clearly on both ends as well.
Frankly I don't know why MIDI doesn't do this; probably because they
couldn't agree on which voltages to send. Having those extra pins just
makes it to tempting not to use them.
