Hi,
if the battery has been changed then it is "possible" that the charging 
circuit has been changed/ modified to that it doesn't charge the non 
rechargeable Lithium one.
I would power up the unit first and see what voltage there is across the 
wires going to the battery. if the voltage seems slightly greater than 
the battery voltage that should be ok for the Ni-mh replacement.
I haven't got the schematics unfortunately.
