Is this something that's used a lot/would be useful?


I'm in the throes of designing a MIDI router (think of a patch panel 
where all the switching is done inside, and can be saved as a set of 
"scenes," so you can change entire patch setups on the fly.)

In addition to the external ins and outs, I am incorporating a channel 
filter, a clock generator, a merge unit, start/stop/reset controls, 
tempo reader, all of which can be patched in.

If having something like what Dave describes on board, easy done.

[ For those who are interested, the router uses a CPLD to give a 16x16 
matrix, 10 or 12 channels (each - in and out) available externally, the 
rest given to internal functions. ]
